Back to School Tips: Surviving (and Thriving) Another Year

Back to School Tips: Surviving (and Thriving) Another Year

It’s that time of year again. Pencil cases are being dusted off, blazers are pulled out from the depths of wardrobes, and parents are once more reminding their children that school shoes are not the same as trainers (no matter how much they resemble them). Yes—back to school season is upon us.

Whether you’re a primary schooler, a soon-to-be GCSE warrior, or a parent trying to figure out where the last six weeks went, here are some expert (and slightly humorous) tips to help make the transition smoother for everyone.

1. The Big Leap: Year 6 → Year 7

For many students, the move from primary to secondary school is the biggest change in their education so far. New buildings, new teachers, new rules… and an overwhelming number of corridors.

For students:

  • Get organised early. Write down your timetable and stick it somewhere visible. Nothing screams “Year 7” like wandering the corridors with a puzzled look and the wrong PE kit.

  • Don’t panic about homework. Teachers don’t expect perfection from day one. Do your best, ask questions, and remember—even Year 11s are still figuring it out.

  • Make new friends—but keep the old. Primary friendships don’t have to disappear. Be open to new people while staying connected with your old mates.

For parents:

  • Expect tiredness (and mood swings). Secondary school days are longer, busier, and can feel overwhelming. Patience (and snacks) go a long way.

  • Encourage independence. Give your child responsibility for packing their own bag. Will they forget a ruler now and again? Absolutely. But it’s all part of learning.

2. For All Students: Start Smart

  • Sort your workspace. A tidy desk really does equal a tidy mind. (Well, mostly. We can’t guarantee your socks drawer.)

  • Set mini-goals. Rather than “ace all my exams,” start with “complete homework before TikTok.” Achievable goals = consistent wins.

  • Use your commute. Whether it’s the bus, train, or a walk to school—listen to podcasts, review notes, or just mentally prepare for the day.

3. Parents: Keep Calm and Carry On

  • Don’t micromanage. It’s tempting to hover, but giving your child space to take charge helps them grow.

  • Stay connected. Ask specific questions instead of the dreaded “How was your day?” (Pro tip: Try “What made you laugh today?” or “Which teacher has the best shoes?”).

  • Balance matters. Yes, grades are important. But so is downtime, hobbies, and sleep. Don’t let school swallow up everything.

4. Final Thoughts

Back to school doesn’t have to mean chaos and stress. With the right routines, a dose of patience, and the occasional emergency biscuit tin, families can ease into the new academic year with confidence.

And remember—no one ever truly knows where the science labs are in Year 7 until about Christmas. You’ll get there.
